Saying Good Bye to Islamabad

And so our Review of the Islamabad Division came to an end. We started our journey back to Lahore, knowing that we may never see Islamabad ever again.

Good thing we took lots of pictures to remind us of all the sights and sounds we have experienced here.

I'll share some of the pictures as we were leaving Iqbal town (where DHQ is). Whether it's the colorful shops, or passing by friends sharing sad news, or the bustling of morning getting started, or a simple game of cricket in a lot, this is Pakistan.

We were back in Lahore in about four hours.

As we were getting out of the truck we were met by a group of ghouls and goblins. Some of the youth on the compound thought it would be fun to celebrate Halloween in February. Lynn let them know when it's customary to observe this event in October, but we had them up to our flat to offer them a treat just the same.

66 Quarters Corps - Islamabad Division

Our last stop in the Islamabad Division was the 66 Quarters Corps. This was some land that was purchased just prior to our coming to Pakistan in 2009. We walked down some back alleys to get there. You can see Lynn and Captain Azra in the first picture walking down the lane.

Majors Justin and Edna are the Commanding Officers here. The Corps does not have a proper meeting Hall, but they use the roof of the quarters to conduct their worship services. At least, that is the plan most of the time. During these days that the temperatures are low they hold the meetings in one of their bedrooms. You will see Lynn and Azra gathered there getting warm by a hotplate.

One of the reasons we wanted to stop here was to have a look at the roof. They have submitted a request to have a shade covering installed on the roof to try to make it more bearable during the hot weather months or during the rainy season.

The quarters has a nice open room that includes the kitchen. Most quarters don't have an oven but Major Edna's daughter had bought them a nice new stove and oven for Christmas this past year. As you can see, the gas burner and cooker are still the preferred way to make the food and chai.

Their daughter was making pakora for our snack and Major Edna is shown making the chai. This is the typical position for cooking.

Before leaving Major Tari offered a prayer for the Corps and this family.

Captain Azra and Lynn walked hand in hand back to the vehicle. It's not uncommon here for even the men to walk hand in hand.

Some turkey's were taking refuge under the car parked next to us.

Hansa Colony - Islamabad Division

Our second stop of the day was at Hansa Colony. I've been here many times before but this was Lynn's first visit.

This is a fairly large Christian community, but very close to the Corps Hall there is a Mosque that has been built. From where we parked I was able to get an interesting perspective on it's close proximity.

Captains Joseph and Zahida are the Corps Officers here. I hadn't seen the building since the dedication just before Christmas 2010.

We were given a tour of the building by Captain Joseph, but there was no electricity for our walk around. It was only a problem in some areas where there were no windows to let in daylight. It wasn't until we were getting ready for lunch that the power came back.

The Captains have four children (3 boys & 1 girl). The middle boys are twins. Their daughter was singing songs for us and showed how well she was doing with her school work.

Lunch was lovely, but it was time to get moving on to the next place.

Rawalpindi Corps - Islamabad Division

We spent the night with Captains Washington and Azra and were serenaded through the night by Major Tari sleeping in the next room. He has the ability to make sounds that I had never heard before, especially in the middle of the night.

In the morning we finished up the last part of the Divisional Review and planned to visit a few of the Corps in the area. As it turned out, we spent most of the day with the Corps Officers of the places we would see.

Our first stop was in Rawalpindi. We had to park the vehicle some distance away as the streets were too narrow to comfortably take the vehicles.

Captain Johnson along with his wife, Captain Asmat are the Corps Officers. He is the Divisional Youth Officer. At one point last year Captain Asmat had suffered a stroke and is still trying to gain back her strength and mobility. They both have a lovely spirit.

The quarters is on the main level and the small Corps Hall is located above them. The chapel is only half the size of the upper level and Captain Johnson hopes to have it extended to give them more space for worship.

Once we were done with the tour we enjoyed a cup of tea and a visit with them. Fortunately, their children got home from school so we got to meet them. Beautiful kids and very smart.

Lynn shared a prayer with the family and we were on our way to the next visit.

On our walk back to the vehicle I took a snap of a butcher shop we passed.

A Night Out High Above Islamabad

After our visit at William Booth Village, the contractor (Tariq) wanted to take us out for a meal. Captain Washington had suggested we go to "The Monal" which is way up in the mountain next to the city of Islamabad.

To reach the summit you have to take hairpin turns at very steep angles. During the day you're apt to pass by monkeys who love to beg for food. We didn't see any since it was already dark by the time we were going, but we did spot a few wild boar scavenging for food by the side of the road.

At one point we stopped to take a few pictures at a nice vantage point of the city. It was strange taking shots like this while it was completely dark. I thought I'd try getting a picture while praying for the work of The Salvation Army in this, the capital city of Pakistan. (My first attempt at "Tebowing")

The restaurant is more of a resort, with shops nearby the entrance. With the time running short we've been considering what items we want to take back with us to remember our time here. I knew I wanted to get another "Topi" (a hat usually worn up in KPK) as I had given two I had received as gifts to Mike and Jon.

The food at the Monal was excellent and it was very nice to get to know Tariq a little better. Afterwards I asked for a picture with Tariq. We also got a picture of the vendor where my Topi was purchased. Captain Azra was trying to get him to reduce his price, but he held firm.

WBV - Prayer as Work Gets Started

The first part of the construction work at William Booth Village involves the building of the boundary wall, a water bore, earth filling and a Community Hall. The scope of work was sent to several contractors to submit tenders (estimates) and after the comparisons were done a decision was made to award the work.

This fit in well with our visit, so Captain Washington suggested that we go out and meet the contractor (Mr. Tariq) and others who were out working on their places, and have a prayer of dedication as the work was getting started.

As we were making our way to where the Community Hall and future DHQ property was we stopped by one of the allot-tees plots. I asked if I could assist and somewhat reluctantly they let me carry a bowl of cement over to where the foundation wall was being built. There is a sense of excitement as several people are building on something that they will be able to claim as their own land.

As we approached the work site the children began to follow. Although our Urdu is very limited and they do not speak English we communicated as best we could and managed to at least learn a few of their names.

At our property the contractor had already started digging the trench for the foundation of the boundary wall. I got into the trench and was able to pull out a few shovels full of dirt. After a few tosses we paused for the prayer of dedication.

With the prayer said, a box of sweets was brought out and we were able to share the treats with the kids. Some of the grown ups also enjoyed the sweets to celebrate the progress being made here at William Booth Village.

Islamabad Divisional Review - 2-3 Feb 2012 (Part2)

Besides me and Lynn the Territorial Review Team included Major Tari (Secretary for Program). We were joined in the Division by Captains Washington and Azra and their leadership team. With the exception of the Projects Officer, they are all Corps Officers. Each of them however, would also serve another function in the Division. This might be as a Divisional Youth Officer, or Finance Officer, or one of four to five other positions.

We have tried to do our best to review all of their books and records, picking three in the Division to have an even closer look at. It happened that the three chosen were also represented by their Corps Officers who second in another position.

I was impressed with the good team that Captain Washington has put together. He was also very willing to give each member credit for the effort they were putting forth.

We stayed at it for a few more hours and t William Booth Village is just getting started. Something special was planned for us.

Islamabad Divisional Review - 2-3 Feb 2012 (Part 1)

Our journey to Islamabad began by leaving THQ at 6:00 am. If we were fortunate we could make it there in about four hours. By comparison with the rest of the country Islamabad is still a young place, still growing and developing.

As we arrived in Islamabad Lynn started taking some pictures of the sights. She caught an interesting shot of a young boy driving a donkey cart. She also captured a shoe repair shop and a butcher shop.

Captains Washington and Azra are the Divisional Leaders. What we failed to realize was that it was Azra's birthday, but shortly after we arrived a cake was brought out and we sang her a birthday wish, followed by the feeding of the cake to everyone.

After a group shot on the stairs the review was underway. It didn't seem like we got very far before it was lunch time and we had to break. We were just getting warmed up, figuratively speaking. The truth was we were a bit cold as there was no real heat and temperatures we probably in the low 50's. After lunch was over two heaters were brought out, but we were using our hot "lunch in a bag" to thaw us out.

New Instruments for GBH

On Monday 30 Jan we were asked to come to GBH and offer a prayer of dedication for the new congos (3 drums) and 20 Timbrels. This was during their normal evening devotions just before study time and supper.

These were purchased through a Mission Support program for the Territory. Lynn has been helping bring it all together through her office. Basically the Corps or Institution pays one third of the cost and THQ (with MS funds) covers two thirds.

This has allowed many of our locations in the Pakistan Territory get new harmoniums, tablas, congos and timbrels.

It's customary to remove your shoes when entering into the Chapel. It's usually not difficult to find my shoes from the rest of them.

The girls were all very happy and this will add a lot to their worship.

Lynn also had some stickers and pencils to give away which helped add to the festive mood of the evening.

Following the meeting we enjoyed some supper with Major Ella. Before we left Uzma came in with Elia (her nephew). This is the little baby that I dedicated several months ago. He's getting to much big.

Nice to Meet You Heika!

Ashi called Lynn to see if she could meet with someone and give them some information about what The Salvation Army is doing here in Pakistan, particularly at the THQ compound.

Heika is from Germany and is here for educational reasons, and living not to far from the THQ compound.

Lynn was able to show her our work at Manzil-e-Shifa where we provide physical rehabilitation. She also learned about our Sustainable Livelihood Program and the Projects that are being done all over Pakistan. Then they stopped in at Sally Ann to talk with the staff there about helping people learn skills that provide them financial support.

She was given a tour of the Girls Boarding Hostel and met with all the girls there and saw them making the chapati.

Some time was spent in Lynn's office talking about the full gambit of programs and activities that The Salvation Army does throughout the country.

A few days later, Lynn arranged to have lunch with Heika and another friend named Ayesha, who we met at the airport on our return from our furlough. Lynn had met her when we came back from our homeland furlough. She had struck up a conversation with Ayesha while on our way to the baggage claim and subsequently had her over for a visit. It was a very nice lunch visit, just the three of them. Our time went by much too quickly and I was really enjoying our little UN like visit. These opportunities have made our time in Pakistan very memorable and informative. One of the features of this little coffee shop is the little greetings that they send in their lattes. Heike's message was "keep smiling." On another visit with Aniel from Switzerland the message was "God bless you."

Time to Meet Phoebe

Phoebe Amjad was born on Monday while we were in Faisalabad for the Divisional Review. It was already Thursday and we hadn't met her yet.

We had a lovely chance to visit with them in their home after returning from our dinner engagement at Saleem's house.

There was concern when we heard that Nusrat and Phoebe both had a little fever when they first got home from the hospital. Fortunately it didn't last and they are in good health now.

Lynn was able to find a few things to give to each person in the family so that sister Priscilla and brother Timothy would not feel left out. Timothy enjoyed his new crayons that he refers to as his "colors" and the book with pages to fill in with his colors. Priscilla was fast asleep as it was already fairly late and she had to be up for school in the morning.

They let me hold Phoebe. I usually shy away from holding babies, but not this time. She is precious.

We're so happy that God has blessed Captain Amjad and Nusrat with a healthy and happy baby girl.

Supper with Saleem Bhatti and Family

One of the employees that we have worked with the past two years is Mr. Saleem Bhatti. He is the Admin. Assistant in the Program Department, mostly working with Major Tari (the Secretary for Program) and for his wife Major Victoria, the Territorial Prayer Consultant.

He extended this invitation a week or two ago and we have started getting nervous, wondering whether or not we'd run out of available nights. The plan was to find a time when all of his four children would be at home. This isn't always an easy task. It was easy to get to Saleem's home, just a few blocks away. It took us about ten minutes, but much of that time was waiting for traffic to allow us to cross the busy THQ road. It's especially bad these days with all the road construction going on.

Saleem and his wife must have recently celebrated their anniversary since there was still evidence on the walls in their home. We were greeted at their door with floral garlands.

As it turned out, this was quite a well planned event. We even had an order of service that revealed the time spent organizing the affair.

We spent some time answering some questions about life in America and politics in particular. Each of his children seem eager to learn and have applied themselves academically. His daughters are Hina and Miriam. Son's names are Sunil (Sonny) and Musa.

The food was very good and it surely was spicy. Good thing we have become acclimated to the taste of chilly peppers. The dessert, shown below was made with rice and carrots. Delicious!

After the meal was finished we started in with some worship. A few requests from the songbook were "He Giveth More Grace" and "O Boundless Salvation" which we sang loud enough for neighbors to hear. Lynn read some verses from the third epistle of John and we concluded the home meeting with a prayer, Lord's prayer and a benediction.

We took time to have a bit of a photo session before walking back to the THQ compound. It was a lovely evening, but we were still needing to visit with Captains Amjad and Nusrat to see the new baby.

Lunch in Rabwah

With the Faisalabad Divisional Review over they suggested that we swing by Rabwah, where I had been more than a year ago to open the new Officer's quarters there.

What I didn't remember is how pregnant the wife of the Corps Officer was. As it turns out, her baby was born five days after I did the dedication of the new building.

After the lunch I was able to hold this little 14 month old bundle of joy and get our picture taken with him.

The Officers in charge here are Captains Sughran and Shaukat Said. Captain Sughran had prepared a dessert with a big letter 'D' on it in my honor. It was really sweet.

This was Lynn's first visit to the quarters after it was opened, as she was not able to attend the dedication with me, so she got the full tour.

These folks have been appointed here for the past five years and they are doing a marvelous work. They are also quite content to stay which speaks very highly of them.

Supper in Galilibad

The closest Corps to the Faisalabad DHQ is the Galilibad Corps. It's also where Majors Salamat and Grace attend with their family. It's not our first trip to this Corps. When we had toured the Faisalabad Division our first year here we stopped there for a brief visit.

The Corps Officers here were just Commissioned in March 2011. Lieutenants Kanwal Aftab and Rubina accepted this as their first appointment. They have three young daughters.

They very graciously received us for supper. The meal was served in their sitting room. During the meal we kept hearing a choir of donkeys, probably tired from a long busy day of tiresome labor.

Before leaving we looked inside the Corps Hall to see their recent renovations. Many Corps are supported during the Christmas season for this very purpose. We also met a few prospective candidates from their Youth Group.

As we were leaving the neighborhood we got out to greet the former Corps Officer, now retired and living in Galilibad. He now enjoys selling pakora and vegetables at his roadside stand.

They took us to a small amusement park called "Sinbad's Wonderland" where the kids would enjoy some small rides. As we were walking through the park I noticed a man who kept looking at me and eventually made his way close enough to speak to me.

He asked if my name was George. I told him it wasn't. He felt for sure I was someone known as "George of Pakistan," a TV personality who travels around the country as a reality TV show. I think he is from the UK. I convinced him I was no one important and after a few mobile phone pictures with us we bid him a good night.

Faisalabad Divisional Review - 23-24 Jan 2012

Our second Divisional Review for this year was in Faisalabad with Majors Salamat & Grace. You may recall they were the Divisional Leaders in Jaranwala until the transfers came out last April and we had a shift in the Territory. We were joined by Captain Diana, the Acting Secretary for Personnel.

The Review covers most aspects of the program, personnel, property and finance of the Division and Major Salamat had done some preparation for our visit by completing most of the review form. This makes it just a bit easier for us as then we just need to verify the accuracy of what is written and fill in any additional information we might feel is needed.

They welcomed us with the customary cold drink and shortly afterwards followed it with chai and refreshments. Their daughter, Juliet, is shown serving the chai. Juliet was one of the youth from Pakistan who attended the WYC in Sweden in July 2010.

Before getting into the review I had a chance to walk around the compound with Major Salamat and took many pictures. I've only included a few for you to see. We were also giving them a chance to make a repair on the generator so we could have some lights when load-shedding happens and no electricity is available.

Major Grace had come out to feed the chickens, which always excites the dog.

Our review continued through the day and into the next. Our supper meal on the 23rd would be held at the quarters of the Galilibad Corps and lunch the next day would be provided in Rabwah. (Those will be shared in the next blogs).

The next morning I wandered into the kitchen to watch as the paratha was being made. Paratha is much like chapati only with much more oil. I took more pictures in their kitchen area as we are hoping to do some renovations at this quarters in the near future.

There are a couple pictures here to prove that we did actually do some work and didn't just have an enjoyable visit with our friends and their beautiful family. (Also pictured is daughter Joyce and son Joel their other daughter, Janet was in class so she is not in the photo). While we were here in Faisalabad we received the word that Captains Amjad and Nusrat had their baby, a daughter. They've given her the name of Phoebe.

THQ Vehicle Auction - 20 Jan 2012

We've been collecting quite a few replaced vehicles with the hopes that we could have a nice large auction with many interested persons coming to bid. As it was we had five vehicles and a motorbike that were advertised in the newspapers for an auction to be held on 20 Jan. from 10 am until noon.

The day before the sale we were busy scraping off any identification from The Salvation Army. We managed to get it all off but you could still make out where the stickers were.

Many of us were surprised at the nice turn out of people wanting to purchase a vehicle from us. We had established a minimum price for each one.

Two of these vehicles had been used for many years at the Training College to transport Cadets. The truck was used several years ago in association with our disaster work up in the northern parts of Pakistan.

The bidders had a chance to look under the hood and have a close inspection of the vehicles before entering their prices. There was a separate box for bids to be deposited for each vehicle.

We also decided to give a 2012 Territorial Calendar to each person offering a bid as a nice public relations gesture. They all seemed to accept them with interest and with appreciation for the work of The Salvation Army in Pakistan.

The auction turned out to be a great success and exceeded our expectations. The minimum prices were all surpassed. The income received will be put into our Territorial Vehicle replacement reserve.

Program Department Opens - 16 Jan 2012

At long last we managed to open a renovated section of THQ with new offices for the Program Department.

Everyone at THQ was welcome to come and help them celebrate. There were a few words by Colonel Ward (Territorial Commander) and he welcomed Major Lynn (Ass't Secretary for Program) to share a bit, and then Major Tari (Secretary for Program) also spoke. Colonel Marguerite (TPWM) offered a prayer of dedication. After Colonel Ward cut the ribbon the department was officially open.

Refreshments were in place and tea was also served. There was a large crowd that came in to give their inspection of the new work space.

Our guys in property did most of the work and as such had saved us a lot of money. If an outside contractor had done it the expense would have been so much higher.

Lynn has been using our flat as her office for the past seven months. The rest of the team was using the vacant flat #1 as their offices.

Lynn had come up with a theme for the bulletin boards that the purpose of the Program Department is to help Salvationist to "Shine Like Stars." (Phillipians 2: 14 & 15)
In Addition to Major Lynn this space will also be accommodating the Territorial Youth Secretary, the Territorial Social Secretary (in offices) the Social Department Administrator (Noman), the Children's Ministry Coordinator (Uzma), the Territorial Prayer Consultant (Major Victoria) and also those who come in a few times a month with speciffic duties to perform.

I would say it was a very successful opening!!

Try to Visualize Pakistan

On the nice long trips we try to capture some of the interesting aspects of this amazing country.

I've selected some of the snaps that I took on the way back from the Khanewal Division with the hope that you will get a better idea of what life is like here, especially in some of the rural areas of Pakistan.

These were all taken from my seat in the back of the moving van.

A Quick Stop Off in Vehari

The Wards dedicated and opened the new building project in Vehari on 5 December 2011. They had observed some aspects of the project that didn't seem to be complete so the Property Department was asked to either go have a look or have the DC visit and send in a report. When I offered to visit Vehari it was music to Major Haroon's ears and he arranged for us to stop there on our way back to Lahore.

What we didn't know about was the adventure in getting there.

This is sugar cane harvesting season and the on the road we took to reach Vehari was a large sugar plant. We did fine maneuvering around the overloaded trailers pulled either by tractors or trucks until we got near to the entrance of the main gate of the plant. At this point they had the road blocked with men eager to get their loads delivered. We were following Major Haroon's vehicle, a Suzuki Bolan with our large 15 passenger van. At one point his vehicle was stuck and I got out to help push him out. Lynn didn't get a picture of me pushing, but she did get a snap of the boys who were gawking into the van. One was enjoying the stalk of sugar cane he had just pulled off a nearby truck.
As we reached Vehari we realized that this was now our third visit. The Corps Hall had been completed and the left over work that the Ward's had mentioned was taken care of. We had some pictures with the neighborhood children, some of which attend the Corps but others just love having their picture taken. especially with foreigners.

We went to Captains Kamran and Rubina's home for tea and a quick visit. I was telling Haroon, Tari and Captain Irshad about the hear no evil, see no evil and say no evil so they followed my direction so I could get a picture of them. I also tried teaching Captain Kamran's son about a Junior Birdman song that has you put your hands on your eyes like goggles. Major Haroon seemed to enjoy that quite a lot.

With the building inspection done and a quick spot of tea, we were on our way back to Lahore.

Shantinagar Lunch with Corps Council - 13 Jan 2012

With the Khanewal Divisional Review finished we were on our way to Shantinagar where they had planned for us to have lunch with the Corps Officers (Captains Arshad and Shazia) and members of their Corps Council.

There is a great history surrounding the Shantinagar and Amritnagar Corps. Remind me to tell you the story about them someday.

Previous visits to Shantinagar we were either in the dark or too busy to get some good pictures of the Corps Hall. I made a point to capture some on this, our final trip.

I've learned that the roof tops (usually easily accessible) are great vantage points to take pictures of the property.

Behind the Corps you will see the typical village homes, made of brick or mud or any combination of these.

The Lunch was being prepared by Captain Shazia and the Youth of the Corps.

The members of the Corps had recently completed a project of laying paver bricks all around the building and walkway. It has really enhanced the property.

We had our picture taken with members of the Corps Council on the front steps of the Corps and then we enjoyed a nice lunch of chicken biryani.

Major Haroon showed us his way of drinking hot tea when he is in a hurry. By pouring it into the saucer it helps it cool down faster.

Final Visit to Amritnagar - 12 Jan 2012

It worked out well for us to be having our supper meal with the Officers in Amritnagar as it gave us one last opportunity to visit there. Majors William and Asmat have only been stationed here since April 2011 but they brought a positive spirit to the Corps with their ministry.

The first picture shows the outside of the Officer's quarters in Amritnagar. The kitchen facilities are not so great and most of the cooking is done outside over the fire.

With the sun going down it was really getting quite chilly. Even in their sitting room where a dining table had been set up for us we were all feeling cold. They had the usual meal of chicken biryani but they also served a very nice fish as well. I didn't get any pictures of the main dishes but I did pull the camera out when dessert was served. What you see pictured is kind of a sweet pasta dish.

After the meal we went next door to the Corps where the Thursday evening meeting was just finishing up. They wanted to introduce us to the youth members of the Corps, since the TYS was with us. Lynn spent a lot of time talking with the youth leader and others that spoke and understood English.

The Amritnagar Corps is the largest Corps in the Territory. It really is a beautiful facility. It's hard to imagine a place like this that has no seating for the congregation. Everyone sits on the floor in the meeting and shoes are always left outside.

Khanewal Divisional Review - Jan 2012

It's time once again for the Territorial Reviews of each Division. The Secretary for Program (Major Tari), and the Assistant Secretary for Program (Major Lynn), the TYS (Captain Samuel John) and I made up the team for the review in the Khanewal Division. Major Haroon and Captain Jennifer are the Divisional Leaders.

The Khanewal Division has 11 Corps, 2 Schools and 24 Officers. The Divisional Headquarters is on a large compound. There is a small Corps Hall known as Khanewal City. They also have a large building that was formerly used for medical purposes. There are a few quarters here as well. Haroon and Jennifer's quarters also have an area that serves as an office.

A cute little puppy called Jerry helped to get our review started. We conducted the review outside on the lawn. The nights are quite cool and we found it warmer outside in the sunshine.

There were several Officers from the Division present along with members of the Divisional Youth Board. The Territorial Youth Secretary met with them separately from our part of the review process.

We had lunch at DHQ but supper was going to be held at the Amritnagar Corps. More about that in the next blog.

We spent the night in Khanewal and the Corps Officers from Khanewal City Corps hosted us for "nashta." (Breakfast). After breakfast we resumed the review and were finished by lunchtime. The plan was to have lunch at Shantinagar and then move on to see the completed building project in Vehari. (subsequent blogs).

All of the records were checked and verified. The review went very well and we expressed our appreciation to the Divisional team for their hard work and positive results.

Attu Ke Awan Sunday Meeting - 8 Jan. 2012

As we left the new quarters to walk to the Corps Hall we passed by some children who were busy playing marbles. They were having a lot of fun.

We were sasked to sit in the back of the church to watch the welcome song on the platform. Lynn had noticed right near the end of the song that their hats actually had the words, well - come. We have seen it spelled all kinds of ways but never as a single word.

Lynn was asked to respond after our introduction and she talked about "new things." A new year, a new quarters and a new life that God provides. Major Yaqub was our translator which had us a little concerned since sometimes we feel that we need an interpreter when we speak with him.

My sermon was based on the scripture in Matthew 7 about the wise and foolish builders. I had used two boys to serve as the houses that were built. I spent time making sure where I placed the taller boy but the smaller boy just kind of got pushed to his spot. I firmly placed each foot of the first boy but swished the second boy around a bit. When the wind and rains came and the waters rose up the first boy was unmovable. As I turned to do the same with the second boy I intentionally bumped him as I turned and he went flying. The people seemed to enjoy the visual effects of the lesson.

I also spoke about the verse from James 1:22-24 that talks about looking in the mirror but then forgetting what is seen. I had the song leader, a nice looking boy come up and look at himself in a mirror. I then took the mirror away and asked him to describe what he looked like. "Beautiful" was his response. I told him he had better look again. I'm not so sure that Major Yaqub was with me with the translation so I don't know how well that message was received, but it was fun and enjoyable and hopefully someone was inspired by it.

After the meeting we walked back past the quarters where I took another picture showing a little better view. I had Lynn pose to show the street view heading back the other direction. I was also amused by the cat sleeping up on the roof.

Attu Ke Awan - Quarters Dedication - 8 Jan 2012

The Territorial Commander asked me to do the opening of the Attu Ke Awan Quarters. He had dedicated the Corps Hall in Attu Ke Awan in 2008. Attu Ke Awan is in the Lahore Division and is not too far from the Wagah Border which is the only passage between India and Pakistan.

This new home for the Corps Officers in Attu Ke Awan was one of the big building projects that we had underway this past year. The other one was a new Hall and Quarters in Manawala, located in the Jaranwala Division.

When we arrived at the turn off the main road to make our way back to the small village of Attu Ke Awan we were met by the Divisional Commander, Major Samuel Barkat and many others from the Corps. They would provide us an escort. As we reached the road that the new quarters is on we were met by more of the Soldiers of the Corps.

As we made our way down the muddy road we passed by barefooted children and neighbors sitting out on their front steps. We were feeling chilly as the temperature was only in the upper 30's.

Lynn cut the ribbon at the front gate of the small compound of the quarters and inside we had a brief meeting to dedicate the newly constructed building. This is now the fourth building in Pakistan that has my name on the dedication stone.

We enjoyed a cup of tea in the home before strolling just a short distance to where the Corps Hall is. The Officers had already moved into this quarters since up to this point they were in rented quarters. They were able to shift at the beginning of December.

After the morning meeting at the Corps we were taken out for lunch by the builder where we enjoyed a lovely buffet meal with his family.

New Furniture for Program and Finance Offices

Late on Thursday night the long awaited furniture was delivered. It was due on 16 December. We had the heaters on in this section because the property guys had just put a fresh coat of paint on the walls where we had some trouble spots.

They only brought the piecs of the desks into the building and then returned on Friday to begin putting it all together. It's still a work in progress. Much work will need to be done on Monday morning to make it workable.

The good news is that the Program team will be able to move down from their temporary places up in flat one. Flat one was unoccupied so when it was decided to remodel the offices in the back portion of THQ they were displaced.

It's going to be especially nice for the guys in the finance office. Their desks have never been large enough. Some had their CPU's, Monitor and keyboard and have often had their work on their lap. The new units all have the keyboard drawers underneath as a pull out. They're gonna love all the space to do their work.

The Cadets Visit THQ

On Wednesday this past week the Cadets from the Training College made a quick visit to THQ. They had really only planned to visit the Project and SLD offices but someone suggested that they might as well see more while they were here.

They made stops at each of our offices and got a quick idea about are areas of responsibility. I caught up with them after they visited me to find them in the new program offices. They were listening to Major Saleem, the Territorial Social Services Officer and Major Lynn, the Assistant Program Secretary. She finished by telling them about the commitment cards for this coming Sunday when we will have our first Senior Soldier's Day of Renewal.

In one photo below you can see one of the new harmoniums and the top of one of the congo sets that have been purchased through Mission Support funds. We have this is a 1/3 to 2/3 payment plan where if the Corps raises 1/3 of the cost the Mission Support funds will cover the remaining 2/3's. Lynn has worked with Ashi to find a few good deals and we have purchased about 13 Harmoniums, 9 Tablas, 5 Congo sets and about 50 Tambourines so far. It has been quite an adventure up to this point.

I'm also adding in Lynn's first trip in a Rickshaw here in Pakistan. She went with Captain Amjad to the furniture store to pay the second half of the new furniture for the Program and Finance Offices. There were no drivers available at the time they needed to go. The only other alternative was to ride on the back of Captain Amjad's motorbike. She opted for the rickshaw feeling that it was less risky.

Ashi's New Year BBQ

Our New Years Day was far from over and we were expected to eat once again. The BBQ that was intended to be held earlier in the week could not be put off any longer, as this was the last day before we would be returning to our work.

The Ward's were also invited to the Ashiq's home and so were Captains Amjad & Nusrat. We didn't realize that it was going to be held in their little backyard but it wasn't too chilly and in addition to the cooking set up that Ashi had there was also a little campfire.

Uzma's two young cousins were also there. They are residents of Joyland Girls Home and they would soon be returning there after having spent the holidays with their Auntie Ella.

The chicken was being cooked over the fire and it tasted so good that I kept eating more and more. Delicious! There was other food available as well that Uzma had prepard; dal and chipati , a nice macaroni dish and a tasty apple salad. For dessert custard and jelly (as they call it) we say jello.

We had a wonderful visit just sitting around the fire and talking and taking pictures. The new year was off to a great start.

New Year Dinner at PC Hotel

The Pearl Continental is a very fancy hotel chain here in Pakistan. There is one not far from THQ and we were invited by Majors Colin and Rosemary to have dinner with them there along with the Wards on New Years Day.

I took a few pictures as were entering in. The security there is very high. Seems this is a place where many dignitaries like to visit or conduct their business. Once we were inside we ran into a huge guard who I had to look up to. He told me that he is 7 feet tall and when he saw I had my camera with me invited us to take some snaps together. First thing he did was put his hat on my head. After the posed pictures we were talking for a bit. He thought I was from Germany but I let him know I am American and he got real excited.

The lobby of this place was amazing. A huge aquarium was there and on the inside a ginormous atrium showed off the guest rooms. We entered into the restaurant where we were looking forward to their much acclaimed buffet.

I'm sure we all ate way too much, but the food was absolutley delicious. I recommend the Fish Alfredo and the Mutton (it was very "falling off the bone" tender). The desserts were just as scrumptious.

Afterwards we adjourned across the atrium to a Tea Room where we extended our visit. We didn't really need any more food or drink but we each managed to get down a cup. The plate of biscuits (cookies) were left untouched.

There was a beautifully restored 1922 Rolls-Royce in the Atrium that had been used by some important people in Pakistan.

New Year's Eve Service

The Ward's were asked to do the 11:00 pm service on New Year's Eve. They had met with the young people to rehearse a few things using the theme "NEW."

Three large golden letters had been made for the platform and a contemporary kind of rhythm chant was used for the three main points; new creation - new thing - new song.

Lynn was doing her best trying to keep some of the children quiet and occupied during the meeting. It was pretty late at night for these kids but they seemed to handle it well.

A few of the young people were asked to give their testimonies. Sunil talked about his transition from Karachi to Lahore. When his parents were transferred he had to leave his job at the Manzil-e-Umead rehab center to come to Lahore. But the Lord provided him a new job when shortly after they arrived he was hired as our Cashier in the finance office.

Karen also gave her testimony about getting a new job teaching children at St. Peter's School, not far from THQ.

At the end of the meeting there were some people going forward to the altar. A few of the children in our row started getting up and Lynn thought they were getting restless. When she tried getting them back into their seats they said that they were going "to the mercy seat" to pray. Moments later they were back to the note paper that Lynn was supplying to practice their English alphabet.

A new year had begun. Welcome to 2012!

New Year's Eve Fellowship - 2011

Lynn and I were asked to do the Family Fellowship on New Year's Eve. The intention was to get started by 9:00 pm and be finished well before the start of the Watchnight Service.

We started with a guessing game. Each family could guess a time and whoever was closest to the time on the clock in the bag would win a prize. Two guesses came very close. One was within 11 minutes and the winner was within 7 minutes. That's probably the closest we've ever had someone come in the many years of using this game in the ARC's.

The plan was to have two main features. The first was a rendition of "A New Day." Normally in the Center's we've had three guys do this at the same time but this time we only used Captain Amjad with Ashi doing the "arm" work. I began by explaining what we were going to be doing and then proceeded to speak as if it was Amjad's thoughts as he was beginning a new day. Starting with the wake up call, followed by brushing the teeth, shaving, and having devotions and his breakfast. I'm not really sure how it went over as I wasn't seeing the reaction of those attending but it looked funny from my seat in the front row.

We thought it would be fun to sing a few campfire type songs, so we chose "Old MacDonald had a Farm." Why we decided to use 12 different animals I'll never know because the song seemed to take forever, but the people seemed to like Lynn's style of leading the song.

The second big "feature" was Dr. Dennis's Amazing Growth Machine. It was fun finding a variety of things that would appear to grow and Uzma played the part of the woman with a sick baby. I kept explaining that I was not a medical Doctor but was a Scientist. The sound effects I had selected weren't working too well over the sound system, but the audience laughed a lot when the baby I had thrown into the Growth machine came out as a 260 pound baby wanting his "Mamma." Lynn took a few minutes to talk about how we should be "growing" in the new year making a spiritual application of our "growth machine."

One of the young youth leaders "Pinky" shared a story in Urdu for the children about "The New Year's gift" and then Lynn taught the Sunday School song, "If we all pull together, what an Army we'll be!" Again applying it to building good relationships within the church to move forward in our mission.

Movie Night with the Youth

Last year we did two movie nights of "The Fouth Wiseman." One for the youth and one for the Officers. It went over pretty well. This year we decided just to do one for the youth and show a fun movie.

We selected the movie that had been a family favorite for years; "The Princess Bride."

There was some concern we had that the movie would not be understood due to it being in English, but the youth are really much better with English than many of the Officers. It turned out to be okay and most of them seemed to enjoy the movie.

Lynn had made plenty of popcorn and there was cold soda available. We had borrowed a large white marker board to use as the screen and with the help of the projector it helped to turn our flat into a nice home cinema. Just a bit of rearranging of the furniture and the borrowing of some extra chairs from flat one and there was enough space for everyone.

After the movie we had a little somethin' somethin' for each of them for Christmas. The table was full of goodies, including many of the cakes that were brought to us on Christmas Eve as is part of the custom here. We also enjoyed some hot Chicken Somosa's that were fresh from the market, and of course tea.

This is a great group of young people and they are the future of The Salvation Army here in Paksitan.

The Day After Christmas 2011 - extended

We didn't leave Major Saleem's home until after 10 pm when we had heard that people were starting to arrive for the Wedding event. As it was, we first went back to our flat before going back out. We then sat in the shamiana for a while before the groom showed up.

The shamiana was set up behind Central Hall, not the normal place for these things. It was back around where the domestic staff housing is.

This was really the first event of what would take three days. This is the grooms party with his family and friends, known as the Mendhi. The bride would be having one much like this one with her family and friends at a different place. The next day would be the actual Wedding and the following day would be the Walima where the families of both sides come together as one.

You know things are starting to get going when the drummers make their way in, banging away on their drums.

Lynn was asked to help greet and bless the entrance of the girls to the event. She was given a plate of rose petals and her job was to toss them onto the passing entourage.

Once everyone seemed to be in place the boys start dancing around, almost into a frenzie. It's apparent that they really get into the excitement of it all.

We had a chance to go up and sit with the groom. Lynn rubbed some stuff into his hand, onto his face, and then dabbed some oil onto his head. After she annointed him she fed him something sweet.

They started serving the meal around 11:30 pm and by the time we left it was well after midnight and there was still a lot of partying going on. On our way out we got stopped for just a few more photos.

The Day After Christmas 2011

Even though Christmas was over it was stilll Christmas night back home. We are so thankful that we have had Skype capabilities with our family as this has helped tremendously. Jen, Mike and Jon are all together out in Colorado, visiting with Derek & Lori and family and we had a chance to skype in with them a few times which was really great. We also had a nice visit with Lynn's brother Ken along with Dawn, Matt, Hillary and Heather. Hillary's husband Elliott also got into the picture when he finally got dressed. ;)

We had two invitations for the day after Christmas. One was to have tea with Majors Saleem and Irshad at their home and the other was to attend the Wedding event for the brother of Saleem (our driver).

As we were on our way to the Major's home we ran into Afzal, one of the THQ maintenance men. We had lost our lights in the washrooms of our flat just a short time before so we thought he might know how to get them working again. We expected it was something simple and turned out to be a two hour project.

We were due at Major Saleem's at 6:00 pm and at the Wedding event at 8:00 pm. By the time we reached the Majors it was just past 8:00 but we saw that no one was in the shamiana when we went by so we knew we had time.

A visit at the Major's home usually involves a brief guitar lesson for Aneel. He is so eager to learn and he is doing very well.

They had tasty treats for us that we enjoyed so much. Pizza, samosa, nimko, nuts finished off with a nice cup of tea.

They gave a beautiful shawl to Lynn as a gift which she really likes.

Raheel was learning a few new games such as "Rock, Paper, Scissors" and the infamous quick hand slap. He showed me his version of the same game. Major Saleem shared a trick using matches which was quite clever.

Even though we showed up two hours late, we stall managed to have a two hour visit. As usual, we finished our visit with a prayer for their family.

Christmas Dinner with the Wards

The Ward's invited Majors Colin and Rosemary Cowdery and us up to their flat for Christmas dinner. The plan was to use the turkey that Major Michael Gabriel (DC-Jhang) had given us for Thanksgiving, but we couldn't use it then due to our schedules.

It was the most Americanized holiday meal we've enjoyed since coming to Pakistan. The only odd part of it was that the sweet potatoes were white, but they were definitely a different texture than mashed potatoes.

The dinner with the Wards and Cowderys was very nice, except that they wanted me to put on the silly crown that came in the popper thingie that was at everyones place setting. Also inside of it was a tiny little toy. Mine was a miniature yo yo.

Lynn had made the turkey in our oven and carved it in our kitchen. She had also made a delicious pecan pie for dessert. With dinner finished we came back down to our flat where the dining table was full.

There was still some work for us to do as Lynn had prepared a mixture of baked goods to share with all the families on the compound. We have some pictures of her handiwork as it was getting wrapped up and ready for delivery.

We made the rounds with my guitar and when they came to the door we started singing "We wish you a Merry Christmas." Most everyone wanted us to come in for a cup of tea but we politely declined with the explanation of having many more stops to make before we were through.

Our final picture is of our nativity scene that has been set up in our flat for the past several weeks. Soon it will be time to pack it away until next year.

Christmas Day - 2011

Majors Victoria and Samuel Tari were assigned the Christmas Day Worship Service. Fortunately they changed the starting time from the normal 9:00 am to 10:00 am for which we were grateful.

The first picture shows Major Tari with his wife sitting behind him next to Major Riffat.

The opening prayer was offered by Major Colin, the Training College Principal.

Colonel Marguerite would light the "Christ Candle" in the Advent Wreath after sharing a bit of what she had prepared on the subject. Captain Diana provided translation for her. Marguerite also shared a lovely vocal solo with her husband on the keyboard providing musical support.

The Youth Choir had a musical selection to share and Captain MacDonald also sang a solo as he played the harmonium.

After Major Tari's sermon he had the full cast of the Christmas Drama come up onto the platform in their costumes.

Christmas Eve - 2011

At long last it was Christmas Eve. We had heard of threats against Christian churches in Pakistan for their Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Services. It didn't stop us from continuing with our plans for our Christmas Eve Service scheduled for 10:30 PM.

A few hours before the meeting the band showed up over by our flats at THQ to do some Christmas caroling. It was the last caroling of the season and it was enjoyed by the Wards, the Chief Secretary and his family and by us as well.

The Christmas lights had been put onto Central Hall a few days earlier and in the evenings it would shine brightly with a colorful display.

The Youth Choir and the Band both performed in the beginning of the service. Lt. Colonels Yousaf and Rebecca were in charge of the meeting and we presume they planned it as well.

Major Saleem had been asked to be in charge of the Christmas Drama that would be performed on the Eve of Christmas. We didn't get interpretation, but it was basically the Christmas story, only this time they were using mostly grown ups for the parts.

Captain Amjad was one of the three "wisemen" even though two women completed the trio.

After a rather lengthy sermon by the Chief he was to lead the final song. Before he finished though, he called the members of the Cabinet to come forward so that the Christmas cake could be cut and shared with everyone. By this time it was well past midnight and we were now officially into Christmas Day.

Caroling at William Booth Street - 23 Dec 2011

Near about 8:00 pm on Friday night we were invited to share in some caroling over on William Booth Street. This is on the THQ Compound on the other side of the garden grove where we have 12 housing units occupied mostly by THQ Officers but there are two being used by Retired Officers and two by emploees and their families.

They suggested that we show up at 10 pm. We thought that was pretty late and was going to interfere with our normal bedtime, but after all, this is Christmas.

As we arrived just after 10 we found that we were among the first to get there. Ahead of us was only the boys starting to gather up some wood for the fire. The plan was to have the fire built between the two rows of houses and down at the end of the lane where there is a bit more of an opening. After some struggle they finally got quite a nice fire going.

There were many who showed up for this and I'm glad we decided to attend and not just pass it off as being too late for us. Last year when we did this Lynn led them singing the 12 days of Christmas. Several of them remembered this and suggested that she do it again so she ran back to our flat to get the large lyric cards she used from last year. It would appear that Major Yaqub wasn't having much fun, judging by the way he is pictured holding the 11 pipers piping card.

It was great fun for (almost) everyone. After that they sung a song in Punjabi that Lynn throught sit ounded like there should be dancing around the fire. So she did and was joined by several others.

During one of the last carols it started snowing. It wasn't really cold enough for snow but they managed to make some out of a can.

During the singing they had been passing out some peanuts for everyone to enjoy and before leaving some large baskets of hard boiled eggs were shared, along with a nice hot cup of tea.

It was all quite a lovely experience and a memory that we will cherish for years to come.

THQ Christmas Luncheon - 23 Dec 2011

Part of the THQ gift to the Officers and Employees is the Christmas Luncheon. This year the unmarried children of all Officers and Employees were invited to attend.

The theme was "The Magic of Christmas." Part of the reason for that was because a professional magician was hired to perform a show before the meal started. It turned out to be a great idea.

As people were coming in pictures were taken of the families with the TC and TPWM, Colonel Bob and Marguerite Ward. Two stations were set up for this to try to make it go a bit quicker.

Lynn had made the welcome sign for people to see as they entered the Shamiana (tent).

The family gift was a very nice nativity set. Part of the program involved having some of the young children enter, each one carrying a different part of a manger scene. The lowly stable set up had been kept hidden underneath what looked like a large wrapped Christmas present. Lynn helped the children get the manger scene set up properly (My job was to lift the box off of the stable without knocking it over).

A few of the older children talked about some of the magical Christmas traditions in other parts of the world, A boy named Noel represented Mexico and told how pointsettia's became a part of Christmas (Lynn had made the sombrero out of newspaper). The pointsettia that Noel is holding was picked from one of several pointsetta plants on the compound. They are in full bloom now. Another young girl, Kinsa told about how the tradition of tinsel became a part of our Christmas decorations.

Colonel Marguerite gave a short devotional about the real magic of Christmas and the true meaning of it all.

Before Santa came in Lynn was asked to form a group and do the "Must Be Santa" song one more time. When Santa arrived she even danced a little jig with him.

Adnan and Reba brought their new baby Sophia out for her first outing. She is shown with her parents along with Santa Claus and the TC.

Later that day we were blessed to have Adnan and Reba visit us in our flat. That gave Lynn a chance to hold Sophia which really made her day!

Lahore GBH Christmas Drama - 2011

Uzma asked if I would play the keyboard to help with the girls choir for the Christmas drama presentation.

The night before we had a quick rehearsal for me to learn the order of the songs, how many verses, etc. but we didn't really discuss how it all fit in with the drama part of things. I guess they figure I'm a professional and would just figure it out on my own. I guess for the most part, it worked out.

We were formally welcomed at the gate of the Lahore Girls Boarding Hostel (just to the left of Central Hall). As we passed through the gauntlet of children, instead of being showered with flower pedals they doused us with some kind of glitter. I had made the mistake of having my mouth open and soon found myself needing to spit these tiny things out.

The drama was set to begin at 1:00 pm but they were having a luncheon reception for the guests and donors of the hostel in the GBH dining room.

The choir did wonderful with their singing and the drama presentation was excellent. We were amused by the young girl who portrayed a prophet and due to the white beard she had to wear was not able to have any expression on her face. A smile would make her face crack.

After the presentation the Chief Secretary presented Major Ella and Lt. Nabila with the digital camera. They were very grateful to receive it and I'm sure they'll put it to good use.

The Lahore Division also presented the home with a new white marker board.

All the girls received their gifts from the guests that were present. A very nice way to spend a Monday afternoon before Christmas. Right after the program the girls and their families enjoyed a quick rice box lunch and then were able to leave with their parents to spend the holidays at their homes.

Joyland Girls Home Christmas Party - 17 December 2011

We had the privilege to attend this year's Christmas party at Joyland, one of our favorite places in Pakistan.

Captain's Alvin and Rubina were kind enough to invite us and we had a great time with the kids from the home.

The girls are so precious. They started with a welcome song and after some introduction of all the guests the program was underway.

The girls performed some songs and special numbers. Lynn was asked to give some background about the home and she had prepared a powerpoint to go along with her comments. At the conclusion of her presentation she thanked the donors and encouraged others to become donors for such a worthy cause.

The girls enacted the Christmas story from the announcement to Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and the wise men visiting the place of Jesus birth and the great rejoicing that "Christ, the Saviour is born!"

Colonel Marguerite presented Joyland with a new digital camera that was made possible from some generous gifts that were given by the family of Colonels Ernie and Joan Payton (Retired), friends of ours from years ago. We had put several of these contributions together so that each of the institutions received a new digital camera for Christmas. Other donors included Majors Paul & Evelyn Mirriam, some Corps from the UKI Territory, and a pending donation from a donor in USA East.

Just before Santa came in we helped the girls perform their song, "Must Be Santa!"

Each of us got a turn distributing the Christmas gifts to girls and they were so thankful for what they received. Pictured below are Dr. Saleem who has become a good friend and supporter of Joyland providing them with new school uniforms for Christmas and a local political leader who came as a guest. Perhaps the powerpoint presentation was successful as before the evening ended one of the guests had committed to donating funds for next years Christmas celebration. God is good.

Followint the program a delicious meal was waiting for us. You guessed it, Chicken biryani and also some tasty sweet rice and of course a warm cup of tea.

A Christmas Carol - St. Peter's School

A group from THQ was invited for a showing of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. As it turned out, Colonel Ward was the "chief guest" for the performance. We were ushered into front seats for the play and the TC was given a hearty welcome complete with a bouquet of flowers.

We were seated on the left side near to the choir. The entire performance was in English, which meant we could understand it all without interpretation.

We were impressed by the student playing Ebenezer Scrooge, at first thinking he was a member of the faculty. Later we found out that he has been getting the lead roles in the plays for the past several years. He was really supurb.

Two of the Chief Secretary daughters teach at the school, as does Sarah Morris and Parveen's daughter, Karen. So this was our connection to the school, which is just a short distance around the corner from THQ.

Every class must have been used, from the youngest to the oldest. The nativity scene was so sweet with the little children depicting angels or shepherds. I took many pictures of them that will remind me of how cute they were and their actions. One little girl kept having to adjust her loose fitting bottom section of her costume.

It was a very excellent performance and really helped to get us into the Christmas spirit.

Christmas Carol Service - 2011

In place of the Thursday evening Holiness Meeting, on 15 December we had a Christmas Carol Service. Typically this is where Central Hall invites nearby Corps from the Lahore Division to come with their choir and or others from their Corps to participate with a Christmas item.

It's always an interesting experience to see how it's done in other places. It seems that most of the choirs would gather together, sitting on the ground, seperated by gender and led by the person playing the harmonium. They pretty much always have someone playing on the tabla to keep a rhythm going.

Captain Alvin, from Joyland, had already asked if we could do the "Must Be Santa" song for this occasion. We weren't sure how it would go over, since it wasn't a religious song. but rather, one of the fun songs of Christmas. The girls did fine and I think Santa went over well, especially since he was passing out candies.

Some of the groups performed drama. Sunil played a Carol Medley on the violin. He's only been playing it for a few weeks with Uzma giving him instruction, but he did very well.

A few of the boys played guitars, demonstrating what they have been learning. Ashi has been giving them some lessons and they are eager to learn.

Afterwards, we just hung out in front of the church. The Corps Officers son, Anosh, loves to have me throw him up in the air. The last two pictures show him asking me to toss him up again while his father, Major Iftikhar is looking on. I've managed to catch him every time. At least, so far.

Pakistan Kids Games 2011

On Wednesday 14 December, Lynn went with the Youth Department along with other Youth Leaders to help support a huge Youth event known as Pakistan Kids Games in the Sheikhupura Division. This was the first of what they hope to have in some other Divisions in the near future. Here is Lynn's account of the adventure held on that day:

I woke up at 5:00 am for a 6:15 departure to Sheikhupura about an hour drive from Lahore. There was a chill in the air but I had not wanted to dress to warm knowing it would be quite warm in the afternoon and unaware of where I would leave any added baggage during the day. We arrived at the DHQ compound in good time and decided to take a visit to the GBH (Girls Borading Hostel) where the girls were preparing for breakfast. Several of the group had spent time in GBH while in grade school and this was the first return visit so they were comparing memories and how things had changed. We shared breakfast with the Pakistan Sunday School Ministries group (PSSM) who would assist with the day and then headed over to the field where the games took place just a five minute drive from DHQ. It was the athletic field for one of the colleges.

The kids arrived slowly and while time passed the youth started with face painting. There was a slight delay when some of the college boys (Moslems) decided to wonder on to the field and would not leave. With the help of Ashi our resident PR man with many contacts he made some calls and was able to get the proper authorities to have them exit the field without any incident.

Eventually things got underway with the arrival of some cartoon friends and the launching of a helium balloon banner. There were many activities to entertain the children including motion songs which they learned quickly and which told the story of the seeds falling on the various types of soil and the little lad who shared his lunch "paanch roti and doo machli" ...five breads and two fish. Then the games began and the children were grouped and played several competitive games including soccer and cricket, tug of war and several others. Lunch was served consisting of individual boxes of rice and then the group came together for some drama which depicted life truths. Before leaving each child received a Bible story book compliments of the PSSM.

We returned to DHQ where the staff ate their lunch and shared together some evaluation of the day and finalized some of the business and finances. This project was funded through one of our mission support projects and the assistance of some funding from PSSM. Each child received a nice cap to commemorate their participation in the day.

It was a fun and tiring day but in spite of that the youth were very spirited on the drive home. The TYS decided to treat eveyone to kulfi (a kind of ice cream on a stick) on the drive home as a way of thanking them for their participation. They were quite happy with the gesture.

Home League Christmas Party 2011

The Central Hall Home League met for a Christmas fellowship and Lynn was asked to privide a few games for them to play. They would have been perfectly content with a rousing game of musical chairs (which they had already planned to play), but they knew theat Major Lynn would do something fun and would probably give prizes. It is always a challenge to explain the directions and after a few practice tries the ladies enjoyed the relay competition and of course the winners were happy to recieve their prizes.

Colonel Marguerite took a lead role in the worship and with the passing of gifts.

As with most of the celebratations during this time there is always the "cutting of the cake." This is a reminder that we are really celebrating the birth of Jesus.

The devotional was given by the TPWM which she centered around the bells of Christmas. She recalled hearing the church bells last Christmas early on Christmas morning and contrastining their sweet chime to the usual mournful sounding call to prayers which we hear so often. She used the lyrics from the "Carol of the Bells" to remind us that even in the darkness the promise is true that "God is not dead nor doth he sleep" and the bells remind us of the peace that is offered through the gift of Christmas, our Saviour, Jesus, Immannuel, God with us. Following the giving of the gifts we enjoyed tea with biscuits and samosa.

Youth Bible Study - Christmas Fellowship

Last Friday night we had too much fun with the kids who've been attending the Youth Bible Study. Most of them are from Lahore GBH. It's a joy to see how much interest they take in learning God's word and at the same time learning more about The Salvation Army doctrines.

Uzma had planned some games for the kids to play. There was a contest to see who could blow up the most balloons and then break them by sitting on them.

Another game had them standing around the table and passing a little Santa doll around until the music stopped. Whoever was holding the Santa at that point in time was asked about their favorite Christmas carol or memory. Or they were asked to perform some task like to sing something.

We introduced a game we used to play with the guys in the ARC. They march around the table while the music plays and then when it stops they have to grab a piece of candy from the table. Of course there is one less piece for the number in the game (much like musical chairs). It keeps happening like this until it comes down to only two people until you finally decide who the winner is.

They played a memory game, where they saw many items put on the table and then had to recall as many things as they could and write it down on a piece of paper.

When the games were all done Uzma caught me off guard and asked me to sing my favorite Christmas carol. My favorite would probably have to be "O Little Town of Bethlehem" but I wasn't sure I'd remember all the words. Another idea started forming in my mind.

I told the girls how frightened I was a week or so before when I was in their "haunted house." This was their fund raiser they did for the Christmas sale. So I told them that the least I could do was to reciprocate.

Suddenly I started stomping my feet and with a loud and obnoxious voice began singing "Deck the halls with boughs of holly, fa la la la la, la la la la." I'm sure they thought I had gone completely mad, but it worked. I had scared the wits out of them. It was a lot of fun.

After the refreshments that were provided (we had to cut the traditional Christmas Cake ) we took more and more pictures. Fortunately for us, Aneel was there so he took many of the pictures for us.

Joyland Rehearsal - 5 Dec 2011

With the Christmas events coming up, Captain Alvin asked if we would teach a few Christmas songs in English to the girls at the Home. If all went well, we'd be able to use the songs for the Carol Sing at Central Hall on the 15th and at their Christmas Party on the 17th.

We chose to teach them Away in a Manger as a serious song and Must Be Santa for a fun one.

The girls gathered in the sitting room of Captains Alvin and Rubina and we had put the songs on a powerpoint for them to see as it shined onto a vacant wall.

The rehearsal went well and the girls enjoyed both songs.

Afterwards Captain Alvin asked if I had any video clips for the girls to watch and fortunately I did.

With the rehearsal done we stayed for a lovely meal and a time of fellowship.

Cricket at THQ - Game of Choice - Dec 2011

The boys here really love to play cricket. They will take any chance they can get to play the game.

During some of the holidays here in Pakistan an invitation was given to the team from Sheikhupura that had played a few times previously. The games were always close and so they knew the competition would be good.

They asked Lynn to get the games started with a prayer. After a few more group shots the match was underway. It was a work day for us but the youth were free due to the Moslem holiday of Muharrum. We were not able to stay for the match play.

The opposing team proved to be in better form on this visit and our team fell to defeat two games to one. But having the chance for good cricket and good sportsmanship was time well spent.

I reminded them that we are all winners in God's sight and had a final prayer before they all enjoyed some lunch together.

Second Advent Sunday 2011

Some of the girls from Lahore GBH came to church wearing Santa hats. More and more it was beginning to feel like Christmas was getting closer.

Lynn was asked to do the candle lighting ceremony for the second week in Advent. There were no materials offered to assist with her preparation, just that it was to be the candle of hope. She did a wonderful presentation using a very clear Bible message. She was translated by Captain Diana and assisted by having two of the girls from the Girls Boarding Hostel share the reading of Scripture passages in Urdu.

Later in the meeting the girls would sing a rendition of Joy to the World with Ashi on the guitar.

Out in front of the Central Hall Corps there was a nativity scene set up. When we asked about it we found out the Captain Aksa's nephew had made it. I suggested we get a picture with him next to it so we can give him the credit he deserves for adorning the Corps with his handiwork.

Annual Christmas Sale - 2011 (Part 2)

Divisions and Departments were able to pay for a table to sell things at the Christmas Sale. The Finance Department had a table with candy and goodies which is usually a big hit with the kids.

You could get your blood pressure taken for only 5 rupees. Face painting was also available. There were many different kinds of foods and crafts for sale.

The girls from Lahore GBH thought a good idea would be to put on a haunted house. Seemed a bit out of place for us, since we would normally see something like this for Halloween, but hey, we had to give it a try. It wasn't really that scary but the important thing is that the girls really enjoyed themselves as did most of those taking the tour. But some were too frightened to enter.

One of the girls from GBH takes the opportunity of the sale to celebrate her birthday with her family and friends. They invited us to be a part of it again this year.

In one photo Lynn is pictured with Mr. Asher David and his daughters and niece. Asher is the natioal manager of our Sustainable Livelihood Developmet program.

All in all it was a great day and some funds were generated in the Territory.

Annual Christmas Sale - 2011 (Part 1)

It was perfect weather for a Christmas Sale. Not hot, not cold. Very pleasant being outside. It was only the 3rd of December but people were trying their best to get into the Christmas spirit. Lynn was on the decorating committee.

The purpose of the sale is to generate income, not only to benefit the employees at THQ but for each Division or Institution to raise much needed funds for their work.

Not everyone in the Territory can participate due to the distance, but there was good representation from the field.

Lynn was once again talked into helping out with the white elephant sale. It wouldn't have been much of a success without her helpful assistance. Many years of experience in the ARC makes her a bit of a professional.

My part was much easier. Just walk around and take pictures all day.

I was very surprised to see a familiar sight from across the THQ compound. The Maize and Blue from a Michigan jacket caught my eye. I had to get close to the guy and get a picture with him.

Birthday at Morning Devotions

Each day at 10 am we gather in the prayer room for morning devotions. It's not a mandatory thing, but it is generally well supported, especially since tea is offered afterwards. A Bible reading with devotional comments, most times a song and always a prayer subject to be remembered. Everyone takes a turn leading this time. At 10:30 the process is repeated in Urdu for the benefit of those who don't feel comfortable with the English language.

Last Wednesday, for my birthday, Captain Amjad and the boys from Finance decided to get me a cake. It was a very nice gesture. They are great guys and I enjoy working with them.

After cutting the cake, as is the custom, I had to feed it to several people. Once Lynn had a taste, I offered it to the Finance team. The only one missing was Shakeel.

It was nice that Captain Amjad had his camera and many pictures were taken.

A Farewell for Andrew Lee

After serving his second two year term in Pakistan it was time for Andrew to return to Australia. He has been accepted into The Salvation Army's Training College in the Australia Southern Territory. He enters the College in January.

A Farewell Tea was held for him last Wednesday. He's not a big fan of these kinds of things, especially when it's done for him. Captain Amjad spoke on behalf of the THQ family and he also put together a powerpoint presentation showing many pictures of Andrew while Andrew's favorite song played in the background. ("In Christ Alone") It was decided that the Territory would give him a gift of a new uniform so we will be sending $300 USD to the Trade Department of his home Territory.

Before going back to Australia, Andrew is taking time to visit friends and tour Europe through the month of December. He should have a great time.

Andrew did a lot of good things while serving here in Pakistan, especially in the area of Finance and Computerization. He finished his term here serving as the National Manager of the Community Flood Restoration Project. That work will continue for the next few years as we endevour to assist those people who had been so badly affected by the floods in Paksitan both last year and this year.

We wish the best for Andrew and pray God's blessing upon him as he follows God's leading in his life.

Church Leaders Discuss Social Justice

Invitations were sent out to many Christian denominations in hopes of bringing together the leaders to talk about Social Justice issues in Pakistan and what if anything could be done in a cooperative effort.

The turn out wasn't as high as we hoped but it was good to sit together in this type of setting.

Lt.Colonel Geanette and Dr. Jim shared with the group the role and mission of the International Social Justice Commission. They also spoke of the history of The Salvation Army and how we've been involved in helping to bring about changes where it was deemed necessary. I am sure that they went away from the experience with a new appreciation for the work being done by The Salvation Army.

While no firm plan was established I believe it has opened the doors for further and ongoing communications with the other Christian churches in Pakistan.
